ALDE calls for greater powers for the European Ombudsman
In light of recent public scandals, Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament have today demanded greater powers for the EU Ombudsman, by tabling an amendment to the annual report on its activities. The ALDE Group believes the European Ombudsman should have binding powers regarding access to documents of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council. Currently, the European Ombudsman’s power to view any EU document held by the institutions and her recommendations to release these documents to the public is not binding and can be refused by the institutions.

Poland: right to safe and legal abortion must be guaranteed
The ALDE Group deplores the results of the votes held today in the Polish Parliament, which rejected a piece of legislation liberalising abortion and approved in first reading a bill for an almost complete ban. European liberals and democrats call on the members in the Sejm to work on legislation that guarantees women’s rights, especially the right to safe and legal abortion. Poland already has one of the most restrictive legal frameworks in this field, and the text approved today could have terrible consequences for women’s health and lives.
