Panama Papers Inquiry: Liberal and Democrat MEPs take leading role in fighting tax evasion and money laundering
Following the constituent meeting of the Committee of Inquiry into Money Laundering, Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion (PANA), ALDE MEP, Petr Ježek (ANO, Czech Republic), co-rapporteur on this matter, said:
“I’ll do my best to close the gap between law-abiding corporations and citizens who pay their taxes and those companies and individuals that use various schemes to avoid their tax duties. The trust of the people in fair play has been shaken and the European Parliament must act.”
MEP Michael Theurer (FDP, Germany) ALDE Group’s coordinator and former co-rapporteur of the Tax Special Committee (TAXE) added: “The inquiry committee is the right answer to the historical revelations about the Panamanian law-firm Mossack Fonseca. We thus assume a pioneering role in the fight against tax evasion, money laundering, smuggling and fraud. Our task will be firstly investigating possible fractures of existing EU law, because we have a dozen directives, acts and commissions of the EU treaties against tax evasion, fraud, money laundering and shell companies. Secondly, we want to analyse where there are systemic weaknesses and take the necessary measures at EU level, just as we did after the LuxLeaks revelations, with the special committees TAXE I and II.
We are about to put an end to these kind of practices, exploited by clever multinationals at the expense of the general public and SMEs, by closing the loopholes created by complex Member State control systems.
Note to Editors:
The European Parliament appointed the 65 members to the committee of inquiry during June 2016 plenary sitting in Brussels. The committee was set up to investigate alleged contraventions and maladministration in the application of Union law in relation to money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion and has 12 months to deliver a report. The mandate may be extended twice by three months. The next regular meeting is scheduled on 29th of September. There are two co-rapporteurs in charge with drawing up a final report. The ALDE Group nominated MEP Petr Ježek, while the second co-rapporteur comes from S&D Group.
The mandate of the PANA Inquiry Committee can be consulted here.
