Georgia must respect freedom of expression and reverse negative trends
ALDE Group Vice President, Petras Auštrevičius (Liberal’s Movement of Lithuania), today wrote an open letter to Georgian authorities, co-signed by a number of MEPs from several political groups in the European Parliament, expressing his worries about the possible taking over of Rustavi 2, Georgia’s leading and the most popular independent TV station.

Boris Nemtsov receives Jean Rey International Prize
The former co-leader of our liberal sister-party, RPR-PARNAS, Boris Nemtsov, who was murdered in February 2015 on a bridge near the Kremlin walls, is to posthumously receive the Jean Rey International Prize 2016, following a decision taken by the selection committee of Jean Rey Foundation. Nemtsov’s assassination happened a few weeks after he started to work on a dossier proving the involvement of Russian military forces in the war in Eastern Ukraine.

MEPs vote for ambitious EU air pollution limits including ammonia and methane
The European Parliament has approved strict new national limits on major pollutants to be met by 2030. The limits are expected to halve the number of premature deaths caused by air pollution each year, estimated at 400,000 in the EU.
MEPs today voted:
• To include ammonia and methane, two pollutants largely emitted from agriculture. MEPs voted to exempt enteric methane (emitted from ruminant animals’ belches).

Towards reform of the citizens’ initiative
At the plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament today adopted a series of proposals for improving the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) in view of the revision of the Regulation in 2016. It seeks to eliminate obstacles that have proved problematic for ECI organisers and sponsors, to act as legal protection against abuse of personal data for which they are now personally responsible.
