No more slave-labour shrimps on our plates
Thousands of vulnerable workers from across South East Asia continue to be forced into modern day slavery by professional Thai shrimp fishermen, who are engaged in mass illegal fishing activity. This scandalous situation, which has been condemned by the International Labour Organization, must stop, say the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, who have tabled a written question today to the European Commission and to the High Representative on this matter. Bangkok is under surveillance by the Commission for these illegal practices. However, the inability of the Thai government to act should prompt the EU to examine its trade relations with this country more closely, as Thailand is the main shrimp exporter to Europe. EU – Thailand trade negotiations were opened in 2013, with a view to concluding a free trade agreement.
