Venezuela: ALDE MEPs denounce human rights situation in Venezuela and call for immediate release of opposition politicians
Members from the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament have today deplored systemic violations of human rights in Venezuela. ALDE MEPs Beatriz Becerra, Dita Charanzová and José Inácio Faria, speaking at a press conference this morning, called on the European Parliament to host a debate on the political situation of Venezuela and play a leading role in the defence of the fundamental rights of the Venezuelans. They also highlighted the concerns expressed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights about the detention conditions of the opposition politicians. At the request of Beatriz Becerra MEP, the Subcommittee of Human Rights is this afternoon holding a hearing on the human rights situation in Venezuela.
