MEPs welcome funding boost for Yorkshire project

Yorkshire & Humber Liberal Democrat MEPs Edward McMillan-Scott and Rebecca Taylor have welcomed €300m EU funding for Yorkshire’s White Rose carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.

The pioneering project in Selby, North Yorkshire qualified for a grant under a scheme run by the European Commission to support renewable energy, grid integration and CCS projects.

CCS involves trapping carbon dioxide emissions from big industrial plants and piping them into deep rock formations for permanent storage in an attempt to keep fossil-fuel powered plants in business and reduce their environmental impact.

The White Rose site will be a new coal-fired power station supplying electricity to at least 630,000 homes.

Edward McMillan-Scott said:

“This is great news for the region. CCS can help provide low carbon electricity even when there is no wind or sunshine.

“CCS definitely has a key role to play in long-term CO2 reduction.”

Rebecca Taylor said:

“This is the lead CCS project in Europe at present and is a significant step in reducing our CO2 use of 80 per cent or more by 2050.

“CCS could also contribute to a diverse energy mix, creating economic development opportunities and even sustaining an estimated 60,000 jobs in the UK by 2030.”
