Guy Verhofstadt wishes Christian Lindner a lot of success with his appointment as the new leader of the German liberals
Today the German liberals chose a new party chairman at their conference in Berlin. The thirty-four year old Christian Lindner succeeds Philipp Rösler at the head of the FDP. Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the Liberals in the European Parliament, acknowledges that the German liberals have a difficult task ahead now that the FDP has no longer elected representatives in the Federal Parliament, after the last Bundestag elections in September: “I wish Christian and his new team a lot of strength and success. I am convinced they have everything it takes to overcome the challenges they face,” Verhofstadt said .

WTO trade package deal in Bali restores credibility of WTO as forum for multilateral negotiations
The 9th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC9) has just concluded in Bali having reached a long-awaited agreement to free up world trade through improved customs procedures that have been holding up the cross-border movement of goods. The Conference also addressed sensitive issues like food security in some of the less developed countries. But in political terms, it was seen as vital to restore credibility to an organisation that was perceived to be losing authority and legitimacy as a trade negotiating forum under the Doha ‘development’ round.
