EU SPENDING PRIORITY MUST BE LOCAL PROJECTS NOT PENCILS IN PARLIAMENT SAY MEPs

Liberal Democrat MEPs, Edward McMillan-Scott and Rebecca Taylor, have called for the European Parliament to cut administration costs and boost investment in jobs and growth in the Yorkshire & Humber region.

As negotiations continue on the EU budget Edward McMillan-Scott said:

“At a time when people all over Europe are having to tighten their belts we need to ensure that the EU is working in the most efficient way possible to create jobs and build the stronger economy that we all need.

“Millions of pounds come to the region through various EU funding streams.  But we want to make sure that funding local projects is always prioritised over funding EU bureaucracy and administration.”

Rebecca Taylor added:

“Investment in research and development – such as the EU research funds that many universities in the region receive including Sheffield, York and Leeds – is key to ensuring that we remain competitive on the world stage and the final EU budget must reflect this.”

“We need an EU budget that put funding into the right areas that will deliver real change and help for local people.”
