ALDE welcomes deepening economic partnership with Southern African countries (SADC)
During today’s vote in Plenary, Members gave their green light to the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the EU and the Southern African Development Community (“SADC”, including South-Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique). Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome the agreement, since it creates new opportunities for the economic development of African partner countries, but also offers European businesses new opportunities.

New EU Global Strategy needs to be pro-active and should take NATO on board.
During today’s debate on the global strategy for the EU’s Foreign and Security Policy, presented to MEPs by the High Representative Federica Mogherini, the ALDE Group’s coordinator on the European Parliament’s AFET Committee, Hans van Baalen (VVD, The Netherlands), pleaded for a close security and defence cooperation with the United Kingdom, despite the Brexit vote.

Venezuela: Europe must play a key role in solving the country’s crisis
The European Parliament today adopted a resolution on the situation in Venezuela, urging the authorities in Caracas to release all political prisoners, to request and allow the entry of humanitarian aid and to respect all mechanisms recognised by Constitutional legal processes.

Pakistan: European Parliament pledges support following Lahore terror attacks
The European Parliament in Strasbourg has today adopted, by a large majority, an urgency resolution on the situation in Pakistan following the devastating terrorist attack in Lahore on the 27th March 2016, which caused the death of over 73 people and injured over 300, including many women and children.
