Verhofstadt on Genscher’s death: We lost a great statesman
Today we sadly heard the sad news of Hans Dietrich Genscher’s death. As Germany’s longest-serving Foreign Minister (1974–1992), the former FDP-Chairman considerably shaped his home country and brought his diplomatic acumen to use to deliver a more united Europe. In Germany he was one of the top political leaders and the most influential Liberal figure. He argued for the creation of the European Union and the defence of its values.

Armed attack against Alexi Petriashvili must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible brought to justice
The armed attack against Alexi Petriashvili, one of the leaders of our Georgian sister-party Free Democrats, who suffered three gunshot wounds on February 26, is shocking and must be swiftly investigated.

EP adopts resolution on recognition of Palestine statehood
Today, the European Parliament adopted a resolution which “supports in principle recognition of Palestine statehood and the two state solution and believes these should go hand in hand with the development of peace talks, which should be advanced.”

Syria: EU must do everything within its power to limit the suffering of the Syrian people
Speaking during the plenary debate of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, ALDE Leader Guy Verhofstadt has said that as long as Bashar al-Assad remains in power there will be no solution ever for Syria.

Guy Verhofstadt, Président du groupe ALDE condamne fermement le massacre de 52 résidents du camp d’Achraf, membres de l’organisation des moudjahidines du peuple d’Iran (OMPI), situé au Nord de l’Irak, le 1er septembre 2013 par les forces irakiennes du Premier Ministre Nouri al-Maliki. Les violences à l’encontre de la population civile sont un crime contre l’humanité.
