Europe cannot turn a blind eye any longer to Hungary attacks on democracy
“Over the past years, the Hungarian government has been relentlessly undermining the principles of democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights. Recent developments have shown that Mr Orban’s administration has been stepping up the pace in challenging EU fundamental values, to an extent that if Hungary were to apply today to the EU, it might not even qualify”, said ALDE vice-president Sophie in ‘t Veld (D66, Netherlands).

EP report on fundamental rights in Hungary falls short
“I am very disappointed that the Civil Liberties committee of the European Parliament today, either due to a blind political allegiance or lack of will, decided to shy away from taking a firm stand on the insidious and persistent threats to democracy, fundamental rights and rule of law in Hungary over the past year or so”, said ALDE spokesperson Renate Weber (PNL, Romania) after today’s vote in the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee on the controversial report on the situation of fundamental rights in Hungary.
