Egypt: Hossam Baghat should be released immediately
On Sunday November 8 the Egyptian Military Intelligence summoned journalist and human rights activist Hossam Bahgat for interrogation. After 10 hours of interrogation the military decided to take Bahgat to a military intelligence unit in Cairo where he will be held for at least four more days. The reason for his interrogation and detention is “publishing false information that endangers national security”. Investigative journalists Bahgat did write several articles about corruption and most recently about a rift within the military on the policy of president Sisi. Other human rights activists fear that Hossam Bahgat will be tried by a military court. In addition to Bahgat’s arrest, the founder and owner of the important newspaper Al Masri Al Youm was arrested on charges of the possession of illegal weapons.
