EU needs to play an active role within UN to achieve its foreign policy goals
The European Parliament voted to adopt a report today focusing on the role of the EU within the United Nation and on how to better achieve EU foreign policy goals.
The rapporteur, ALDE MEP, Paavo Väyrynen (Centre Party, Finland), calls on the EU institutions and the Member States to consider the possibility of strengthening their role in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) by developing it into a Sustainable Development Council.

Verhofstadt welcomes Avramopoulos call for a European Intelligence Agency
Guy Vehofstadt, president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament, welcomes the call of the Commissioner for migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, for the creation of a European Intelligence Agency. It should not be an idea to be implemented in the long term but as soon as possible. ALDE urges the Home Affairs and Interior ministers, meeting today in Brussels, to take immediate measures to strengthen Europe´s anti-terrorism capacity and to support the setting up of a fully fledged European intelligence agency to fight against borderless terrorism. This European agency should be subject to a democratic oversight. Mandatory Exchange of information between Member States and their national state security agencies is a key priority.
